Steve Jobs Health

If you haven't been following the news lately, Steve Jobs' health is the latest buzz at Apple. It has created some drama for the fans of the ever-expanding company and left many uneasy. Steve Jobs, if you haven't noticed, has been losing weight throughout 2008. In a recent letter to his employees he stated, “Fortunately, after further testing, my doctors think they have found the cause—a hormone imbalance that has been “robbing” me of the proteins my body needs to be healthy. Sophisticated blood tests have confirmed this diagnosis.” So there you go… a hormone imbalance??? To me it looks eerily similar to a cancer relapse. To remind you, Jobs had an early and rare form of pancreatic cancer in 2004, which was successfully removed. For everyone’s sake let’s just hope I’m wrong.

In his latest letter, he stated that he “learned that my health-related issues are more complex than I originally thought.” Later in the later he also stated that he was going to be removing himself from the day-to-day operations at Apple in order to rest and recover. Jobs did not give details as to what “more complex” entails but I think we can conclude that it’s not good.

iMac

Design

Processor: The Aluminum iMac packs a punch when it comes to processor power. On the 20 inch model you have the choice of 2.4 ghz or 2.66 ghz. On the 24 inch model you have the choice of 2.8 ghz or a whopping 3.06 ghz. All of these you can upgrade to 4 gigabytes of RAM which in any case will give you unreal speeds.

Graphics: The graphics in the new iMac are far superior to what were in the old iMac. It boasts an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GS with 512MB dedicated memory. This is up to 2.2x faster than the previous generation iMac. It is able to play all games on full settings with no problem.

Display: The display on the aluminum iMac's are brighter and more colorful than ever. The resolution (thanks some to the graphics card) is spectacular. The 20 inch iMac has a resolution of 1680 by 1050 while the 24 inch has 1920 by 1200.

Memory: The new iMac gives you 2GB memory standard with the option to upgrade to 4GB. This give the user the ability to multitask, render large videos, or edit high resolution images.

Storage: Bigger hard drives are new coming standard in most computers today. The iMac now offers a 250GB hard drive standard on its low end 20 inch model, a 320GB hard drive on the high end 20 inch model and the same on the 24 inch model. All of these come with the ability to upgrade to larger hard drives.

Wireless: The wireless revolution continues as Apple now is including wireless N standard on the iMac. For those of you unfamiliar with wireless N, it provides twice the range and up to twice as fast as previous wireless technologies.

Overall Impression: My overall impression of the aluminum iMac is high because of the new features included with the machine and the use of aluminum instead of the plastic Apple used in the past. Since I actually own this machine, I would recommend it to anyone who wants an all in one machine with great performance and still has a small footprint.

New Macbook Pro

Design

Enclosure: The new Macbook Pro's enclosure is similar to that of the new Macbook and the Macbook Air. The one thing you may notice between the new MBP and the old MBP is the new magnetic lid. It seems Apple has decided to adopt the magnetic lid to all of its notebooks.

Display: Well there basically is no difference between the Macbook and Macbook Pro. They both use the same technologies. Although I have been hearing reports that the Macbook Pro's screen is brighter than the Macbook's. This is probably because Apple uses (not surprisingly) more expensive components in the Macbook Pro than in the Macbook. Hmmm that goes back with the old saying "you get what you pay for".

Trackpad: The new trackpad is altogether the same as the Macbook's. The trackpad is the mouse button and it's made of glass. No better features than the Macbook. Sorry.

Keyboard: Now here's where Apple made a design jump with the Macbook Pro. They have adopted the keyboard of the Macbook. Now whether this is a good or bad thing is all a matter of opinion, so I'm gonna leave that up to you. Personally once you get used to it, it's just like typing on any other keyboard. Although I do think the previous generation MBP keyboard was more comfortable for you fingers to rest on.

Graphics: I am extremely impressed with what Apple has done with their graphics on this machine. It is again a new standard set by Apple.

Overall Impression: The new Macbook Pro is of course a great looking notebook and has great components that make it hard to compete with. What I don't like about it is how it so closely resembles the Macbook and how Apple decided it would be a good idea for them to look like each other. In my own opinion I think that it is a bad idea because not only did people used to buy the Macbook Pro because of the performance but also for the looks. Now that both look the same and can play games, you are paying an extra limb for what? A bigger screen? Woo hoo!!!

New Macbook

Yes this is in fact the new Macbook. Beautiful isn't it? Ok now down to the full review of the new Macbook.
Let's first start with the new design of the Macbook. You can see the difference right?

Design

Enclosure: To start they have housed it with an aluminum enclosure similar to the Macbook Pros and shaped it similar to the Macbook Air. But the main structural difference between this and any other Apple notebook is the unibody frame design. This allows Apple to replace many parts with just one, creating a much lighter, durable notebook.

Display: Another thing you might notice is the glass covered LCD display. This makes for a more vivid, more durable screen. But something that is not visible to the eye is the new technology behind that LCD display. Apple has intelligently decided to put in an LED display rather than the conventional CCFL display, meaning a brighter display and no waiting for the screen to warm up. Good job Apple.

Trackpad: The new and improved trackpad is very nice. It is made of wear resistant glass and provides silky smooth travel for your fingers. Another key thing to note about the trackpad is the mouse button. If you haven't noticed, it isn't there. Well it is there but you just can't see. The reason for this is because now the whole trackpad is the mouse button. Just another ingenious invention from Apple.

Keyboard: The keyboard on the Macbook hasn't changed from its predecessor but there is one significant thing that has changed. Yup, the new Macbooks now have backlit keyboards, but there's a catch, its only on the higher end model. :(

Graphics: As you may or may not know, Apple has beefed up the graphics in the new Macbook. Traditionally, notebook manufacturers in order to make a lighter, more compact notebook, skimp on the graphics. The new Macbook sets the standard for small yet powerful notebooks. While a traditional computer logic board contains multiple components: the graphics processor, the CPU, and the two chips that control communication throughout the computer. The new Macbook contains only two components: the CPU and the graphics processor. This new graphics processor is the Nvidia GeForce 9400M and it is spectacular. It gives you all the performance you need without sacrificing battery life.

Overall Impression: My overall impression of the new Macbook are very good. I like the new overall design of the machine however I do not like the lack of a mouse button on the trackpad. Other than that it is a beautiful machine with some great new features.
